A card game is any game that uses playing cards as the primary device for play, whether traditional or game-specific. There are numerous card games, as well as families of related games such as poker. A few card games played with traditional decks, have formally standardized rules and international tournaments, but the majority are folk games with rules that vary by region, culture, and person.

  • A card game is played with a deck or pack of identically sized and shaped playing cards.
  • Each card has two sides, one on the front and one on the back.
  • The backs of the cards are normally indistinguishable.
  • The card faces may all be unique, or there may be duplicates.
  • Each player is aware of the deck's composition.
  • Several decks may be shuffled together to form a single pack or shoe in some cases.

What is Special about Card Games?

  • Games based on playing cards take advantage of the fact that cards are only individually identifiable from one side, so each player knows only the cards they hold and not those held by others.
  • As a result, card games are frequently referred to as games of chance or "imperfect information," as opposed to games of strategy or "perfect information," in which the current position becomes fully visible to all players during the game.
  • Many games that are not traditionally classified as card games do, in fact, use cards in some aspect of their gameplay.
  • Some games in the card game genre include a board to play.
  • The gameplay of a card game depends on the use of cards by the players.
  • The board is used simply as a guide for scorekeeping or card placement. Whereas for board games, the primary non-card game genre to use cards, generally rely on the use of the cards by the players.
